Mise-en-scene Note

I made a 5 min short action thriller. Action thriller movies usually have low key lighting in most of the scenes, for eg, where drug dealings or secret meetings are taking place. So just by following the code and conventions of action thrillers I also used low key lighting in my movie. Since my movie was based on old Italian Mafia’s, I dressed my characters accordingly with black suits and shoes and old retro hairstyles. The Godfather in the movie also had a cigar in his mouth which portrayed that he’s superior. He also had a stick in his hand which further showed that he’s rich and is the boss. I used black car in my movie which further gives a dark and evil look to the godfather. The suits that my characters are wearing will also give them a much bossy and professional look. The boss is shown wearing sunglasses at night and this also give the character more superior look. Over all I used dark surroundings and things to get a darker feel for my movie.

Character Profiling

The Godfather

My all characters are very important but in particular The Godfather is a very special one. He has a very bossy and dominating personality, he’s the boss of the whole mafia. And as he gets to know Louis, the person who betrayed the mafia is back in the country he calls his special man Vincenzo to go find him and kill him.

Vincenzo:

We can say that Vincenzo is the main protagonist of this movie. He’s the special man of the godfather. He’s been a part of the mafia family since a very long time. He’s charming and good looking, but appearance could be deceiving. As according to the task given by godfather to him to kill Louis, he finds him out and kills him.

Louis:

Louis is the victim. He joined the mafia 10 years ago, but he was sick of killing and all the dirty works, so he decided to leave it. But he had no idea that the dark shadow of mafia will keep on following him for the rest of his life and will kill him one day. He dies in a basement parking after getting shot by Vincenzo.

Scene 1:

In the first scene, a flashback is shown in which Louis joins the mafia.

Scene 2:

In the second scene, The godfather is shown in the car smoking cigar. He then picks up his phone and calls his special man Vincenzo to meet him at the red light district in 15 mins. As he meets Vincenzo in an isolated place in dark he tells him about Louis that he’s back in town. He left the country and went abroad as he betrayed the mafia and he knew his life would be in danger if he stays. So he tells Vincenzo to teach Louis a lesson for leaving the mafia. And then the godfather leaves the scene in his car.

Scene 3:

In the third scene, Louis is shown entering the frame in his car. He stops the car, and abandons it while taking out his bag, because he knew someone might have been following him. He makes his way down to the basement to put his suitcase in another car, so he could escape to the airport and leave the country without getting into trouble, but as he stops outside the car he hears someone calling his name from behind. And that very moment he got to know that he’s in trouble, and as he looks back he saw Vincenzo waiting for him already there. He was there to kill him, but before doing that he tells Louis that he shouldnt have betrayed the mafia. Just in a blind of eye he gets up from his chair and shoots Louis, and afterwards he drags Louis’s body and put it into the trunk of the car.

My 5 min action thriller is based on old school mafia rules, that you can join the mafia but you can never leave. In my film, Louis joined the mafia aka “Family” 10 years ago, and afterwards he left it due to his personal reasons. He left the country and went abroad, but after a very long time he came back to the country. He thought his all troubles will end after leaving it, but he was wrong, as the dark shadow of the Mafia kept on following him. The Godfather gets to know about his presence and he gives a task to his special man Vincenzo to find out Louis and make him pay the price of betraying the mafia.

Lighting Plan

Lighting is very important part of cinematic experience. Different type of lighting is used in movies to show different kinds of moods. Lighting actually depends from genre to genre, for example a horror movie will have more low key lighting scenes and even action mystery movies will have some low key lighting scenes as well as some high key lighting scenes to show action scenes.

My movie is an action thriller, and I’ve used low key lighting through out the whole movie. This is because my movie involves some contract killing and stereo typically low key lighting effect is used to connote secret meetings and dealings. Using low lighting at night is a very big challenge so I had to made use of car headlights to shoot some scenes outside, but I used some other sources of light to while indoor shootings. I used my lighting tools to create a good action mystery effect.
